The section of Power Electronic Systems carries out research in mainly three areas all closely related to the use of power electronics. The section focuses on:
- power electronic components
- power electronic converters
- power electronic systems, including drives.
Power Electronic Components
This area includes both power semiconductors and passive components which together constitute the basic building blocks for construction of power electronic converters. The main focus is modelling and characterisation of silicon-based components such as power diodes, IGBT’s, and MOSFET’s, but emerging technologies also have our attention.
Passive components subjected to high currents, voltages and frequencies such as inductors for use in resonance converters are also studied both theoretically and experimentally.
Power Electronic Converters
Research activities classified in this category concern power electronic converter topologies. The section works with a variety of classical topologies for conversion of electrical power such as ac/dc and dc/ac converters, but innovative work on topologies such as multi level converters, medium voltage converters also forms a vital part of the research.
Some of the key disciplines in this area are: analysis and design of power circuits, design of auxiliary circuits (gate drivers, measuring circuitries etc.) and hardware-near control (modulation techniques) of switching converters.
Power Electronic Systems
Here, we focus on complete systems in which a power electronic converter interacts with other components such as connected loads and feeding systems. Major research efforts lie within modelling, simulation and practical design of such systems, including their control implemented digitally in e.g. micro controllers, digital signal processors or FPGA’s.
Examples of studied systems include: electrical drives, single- and three-phase grid interfaces, active filters, uninterruptible power supplies and custom power converters for use in medium-voltage utility grids.
Research Mission
The overall research mission for the section is to contribute with innovative research on an international level securing the use of power electronics with focus on both high technical performance and reduced energy consumption for the benefit of our environment.
