Organisation profile

The Department of Cardiovascular Surgery is responsible for all cardiac and lung surgery as well as care among adult patients in the North Denmark Region, according to the current specialist planning from the National Board of Health. In some areas, this is done in a formal collaboration with the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery, Aarhus University Hospital, Skejby. No transplants or pediatric surgeries are performed. In addition, the department handles the surgical treatment of malignant and benign esophageal disorders, which takes place in close collaboration with the Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery A.

A minor research sector in the Department has been created, and most research projects in the Department are initiated from this sector. Research is conducted in several areas in collaboration with national and international partners. Special areas of interest are e.g. postoperative atrial fibrillation, postoperative pain following lung surgery, accidental hyperthermia, tele-rehabilitation following cardiac surgery, and psychosocial reactions among patients and relatives when elective surgeries for various reasons are cancelled.

The use of new technology and surgery with less-invasive methods is a growing research area focusing on implementing these methods in daily practice.

The Department is involved in and handles teaching and supervision of medical and PhD students from Aalborg University.
