The subject area of the division includes both theoretical, mechanical modelling and experimental characterization of structures and structural materials.

The research includes analyses of complex, load-bearing structures such as offshore structures, wind turbines, shell structures and large bridges. Analyses are carried out for complete structures, for structural details such as joints, and at the micro level for the materials used in these applications. Examples of specific research projects are listed below:

  • Analysis of structures subject to static and dynamic loads, which may be stochastic including human induced loads.
  • Fracture mechanics and fatigue of e.g. wood concrete, steel, composites and material interfaces
  • Constitutive modelling of structural materials for implementation in efficient numerical methods such as the finite element method
  • Fluid-structure interaction for the modelling of wind induced loads on wind turbines, large bridges and buildings including the modelling of extreme loads.
  • Modelling of materials and material instabilities with emphasis on materials with microstructure such as concrete, fibre reinforced concrete, wood, fibre reinforced polymer composites.
  • Structures and materials under influence of fire including spalling of high-strength concrete.
  • Static and dynamic stability of structures including the influence of geometrical imperfections
  • Rational, reliability based planning of inspection and maintenance strategies, assessment of the safety of existing structures and establishment of a probabilistic design basis for sea based wind turbines, large bridges and offshore structures.
  • Monitoring and modal analysis of structures.
  • Technology for high-performance concrete.
  • Durability of concrete and wood structures including studies of degradation mechanisms.
