SITUATED PSYCHOLOGY aims to become a unique research group that combines several subdisciplines within psychology that are not often brought together. This includes educational, social, personality, and clinical psychology in addition to innovative methodological developments.
What unites the researchers in the group is a shared interest in the situatedness of psychology and its phenomena. Acting, thinking, feeling, learning, suffering, and developing cannot be separated from the social, material and historical contexts in which they take place. In this sense, the researchers in the group are inspired both by established contextual related perspectives in psychology and related disciplines (e.g. situated learning theory, ecological and cultural-historical psychologies, positioning theory) and by the recent 4E wave in philosophy (understanding the mind as embodied, embedded, extended, and enacted).
By addressing a situated psychology, we wish to say more than simply stating the obvious, e.g. that psychological phenomena are social and relational. The term ‘situated’ is meant to express the idea that we need to bring together perspectives that focus on the material and semiotic properties of human lives in environments at the same time. This calls for new theoretical and empirical orientations.
ACTIVITIES. We aim to develop our research in directions that are both empirical, theoretical, and applied. The research group will have a number of different functions such as collective development and sharing of ideas and establishing a common frame of reference to be used in concrete research projects and grant applications.
In the long term we aim to:
- Develop the idea of Situated Psychology further, through collaborative publications (articles, monographs)
- Develop grant proposals that focus on developing Situated Psychology as an empirical, theoretical and applied framework
