Research profile

I am a professor WSR of organizational learning at the Faculty of Social Science at Aalborg University in Denmark and visiting research fellow at the Stockholm Centre for Organizational Research, Stockholm University. I am research group leader of the research group FIRM (Firms, Innovations, Relations and Management).  The Firm group focuses on three areas: Organization, strategy and leadership. Every member of the FIRM group har her or his own specific profile area within these areas. The FIRM focuses on strategic areas: Sustainability in organizations, which concerns how organizations relate and create strategies on the basis of the 17 UN sustainability Goals; and digitalization in organizations, which concerns how digitalization affects organization, strategy, leadership, learning and business development in and across organizations. My specific research profile are built on storytelling, ethics, learning and power in organizations. Particularly I work from 1) Foucault’s understanding of power and his later ethical writing concerning practices of the self, 2) Arendt’s political philosophy concerning the relations between storytelling, space of appearance, natality and her writings on thinking, action and judgment, and 3) Benjamin’s original philosophy concerning the relations between space, materiality and storytelling. I am currently engaged in developing a terrestrial ethics for sustainability and develop concepts and methods for leadership development and management education (“Gaia leadership") and concepts and methods for change management (“Gaia coaching”) and Sustainable business models. I am involved in collaboration with the Port of Aalborg, the municipalities of Sorø, Frederikshavn in Denmark and Munkedal and Sötenäs in Sweden. We are reaching out to European partners through the research platform European School of Governance where I am leader of the Gaia Storytelling Lab together with David M. Boje. Furthermore I work digitalization from a cultural and humanist perspective. I look at the digitalization of technologies, where we should gain a deeper understanding of technologies as material practices that organize our relationships and daily life. Through this work I am developing an ethics of technology. I have a broad profile as a researcher and teacher. I have extensive experience in developing and running educational programs. I believe in working from practices in organizations in continuous education programs like the master programs we run at Aalborg University and I believe in the problem-based learning method as a way of bringing theory and practice together. I have served as Head of School for the School of Consciousness and Change from 2011-2013, as study leader of the Master in Public Governance (2008-2011) and has been responsible for the accreditation and development of educational programs including the BA in Organizational Learning and Master in Public Governance. I have a research network all over the world including USA, Europe, Australia, South Africa, Colombia and Brazil.
