I am a Roman historian specialising on republican history, focusing on civil war, political and military history as well as ancient historiography. I am co-editor of Brill's Historiography of Rome and Its Empire Series (HRE, Brill, Leiden) and Studies in Ancient Civil War (StACW, De Gruyter).

I am the author of three monographs: Res Publica Constituta: Actium, Apollo and the Accomplishment of the Triumviral Assignment (Leiden & Boston, 2009) and Triumphs in the Age of Civil War. The Late Republic and the Adaptability of Triumphal Tradition (London, 2016). My latest monograph, From Hannibal to Sulla: The Birth of Civil War in Republican Rome, is published (2024) with de Gruyter, Berlin, as part of the new series, Studies in Ancient Civil War.

I have written numerous articles on political and military history. I have co-edited five volumes: a volume on the Roman Republican triumph with Frederik Juliaan Vervaet (The Roman Republican Triumph: Beyond the Spectacle, Rome, 2014), two volumes on Cassius Dio with Jesper M. Madsen (Cassius Dio – Greek Intellectual and Roman Politician, Leiden & Boston, 2016; Cassius Dio the Historian: Methods and Approaches, Leiden & Boston, 2021), a volume with Frederik Juliaan Vervaet on civil war and historiography (The Historiography of Late Republican Civil War, Leiden & Boston, 2019), and a volume with Andrew Scott on Cassius Dio (Cassius Dio: The Impact of Violence, War, and Civil War, Leiden & Boston, 2020).

I am a member of the Advisory Committee of the book series Libera Res Publica (LRP; the LRP is jointly edited by Editorial Universidad de Sevilla and Prensas de la Universidad Zaragoza, and is co-directed by Antonio Caballos Rufino (Universidad de Sevilla), Francisco Pina Polo (Universidad de Zaragoza) and Cristina Rosillo López (Universidad Pablo de Olavide, Sevilla).
