Personal profile
Research profile
Giulio Bianchi Piccinini is an associate professor in the Traffic Research Group, at Aalborg University. After completing the Master in Automotive Engineering at the Polytechnic University of Turin, Giulio was employed for more than two years in the automotive industry. Later, he earned a PhD in Transportation Systems from the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto. Before joining AAU, Giulio worked for 9 years at the Crash Analysis and Prevention group at Chalmers University of Technology.
His research focuses on traffic safety, with a special interest in the understanding of crash causation mechanisms for crashes involving different road users. Giulio’s research contribution has been mainly aimed to understand crashes and near crashes involving drivers of passenger cars and trucks as well as cyclists. The methodology used for the analysis of crash causation mechanisms is based on expert assessment and quantitative analysis of different information (e.g. video images, kinematic variables, and description of the crashes) collected during driving in the real word (e.g. naturalistic data). The theoretical foundation for his work anchor to existing research on engineering, cognitive science and human factors to identify human attention, expectations and reactions during driving.
Teaching profile
In his previous employment at Chalmers, Giulio was the Director of the Master programme in Automotive Engineering and the Master programme in Mobility Engineering. He was also responsible for teaching human factors and driver behaviour in the context of traffic and vehicle safety. Currently, Giulio is supervising students in the Bachelor on Civil engineering (Byggeri og anlæg) and in the Master on Road and Traffic (Veje og trafik).
Administrative profile
Currently, Giulio serves as member of the editorial board of the Journal of Safety Research (JSR) and European Transport Research Review (ETRR) and as reviewers for other peer-reviewed journals.
