Personal profile

Research profile

Thomas Alrik Sørensen is a cognitive neuroscientist and psychologist who bridges fundamental psychological theories with cognitive neuroscience. His work explores the mechanisms of consciousness, visual awareness, attentional capacity, and memory, with a focus on how these processes are influenced by expertise, individual differences, and underlying neural structures.

His research spans cognitive functions such as decision-making, visual short-term memory, and attentional processes, offering valuable insights into how individual cognitive variations shape broader behavioural patterns. He has also investigated synaesthesia and other forms of perceptual uniqueness, examining the relationship between sensory experiences and cognitive interpretation.

A central theme of his research is individual differences — not only in cases of brain injury or disease but also in healthy individuals — and how cognitive organisation is shaped by neural structures and interactions with the environment.

Teaching profile

Thomas Alrik Sørensen is dedicated to fostering a rigorous and supportive learning environment for students across various levels of psychology and cognitive neuroscience. His teaching portfolio includes courses in statistics, research methods, cognitive psychology, cognitive science, and neuropsychology, where he emphasises a strong grounding in both theoretical knowledge and practical application.

In addition to lecturing, he supervises master’s thesis students, guiding them through the complexities of research design, data analysis, and scientific writing. With experience in teaching a broad range of topics — from psychological assessment and biological psychology to experimental and social psychology — Thomas aims to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the field and the skills necessary for academic and professional success.

Administrative profile

Thomas Alrik Sørensen is the Head of the Centre for Cognitive Neuroscience at Aalborg University, and is responsible for and the principal coordinator of both the Laboratory for Experimental Psychology and the Neuropsychology Programme at the Department of Communication and Psychology. In addition, he is a member of the department council and the international coordinator for psychology.

PhD Supervision

Thomas Alrik Sørensen has supervised and co-supervised a number of PhD students, both in his own group at the Centre for Cognitive Neuroscience and with international colleagues. His main areas of supervision align with his research interests.
