Research profile

Antonia Scholkmann is an Associate Professor at the Department of Culture and Learning at Aalborg University, where she researches how artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming higher education. With a background as a Doctor of Philosophy in organizational psychology from TU Dortmund University and a university diploma in psychology from University of Tuebingen she brings an interdisciplinary perspective to the study of learning, technology, and education policy.

Her research focuses particularly on the interplay between generative AI and learning, exploring how universities and other educational institutions are implementing and responding to AI. She has made significant contributions to understanding digital transformation in the education sector—especially in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic—as well as to the study of problem-based learning (PBL), a core pedagogical approach at Aalborg University.

Scholkmann has held visiting researcher positions at Macquarie University in Sydney in both 2016 and 2017, and at the Nordic Institute for Studies in Innovation, Research and Education (NIFU) in Oslo in 2022. These international collaborations have enriched her global perspective on educational development and innovation.

She combines practice theory, activity theory, and both neo-institutional and poststructuralist perspectives to analyze how education is shaped by and contributes to broader societal change. Methodologically, she works with mixed methods and has a growing interest in discursive and socio-material practices.

Antonia Scholkmann is a dedicated educator and was named “Teacher of the Year” in 2023 by the Study Board for Learning, IT and Organisation. She is active in international research networks and has published over 100 scholarly works, including books and articles on higher education, learning quality, and educational leadership.

She also contributes to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly in the area of quality education, and is a sought-after voice in discussions about the future of universities and learning technologies.

Antonia Scholkmann is available for lectures, workshops, and courses on topics such as artificial intelligence and learning, as well as problem-based learning—offered to educational institutions, companies, and public organizations.
