Personal profile

Research profile

As a production engineer and computer vision researcher, I am interested in developing reliable robotic solutions that enable safe human-robot interaction based on computer vision. I work within the Robotics & Automation Group in the Department of Materials and Production of Aalborg University in Denmark and my daily activities cover research and teaching mainly in the area of Artificial Intelligence for Robotics & Manufacturing. My particular focus is driven by the challenges of designing reliable robot systems that can be intuitive to use, safe around humans and bring Intelligent and Collaborative Robotics closer to real-world applications. A recent research interest I find particularly intriguing is the investigation of robot behaviour in industrial and social contexts and how robot and AI ethics are explored and included in that behaviour.

I have been involved in multiple research projects in the areas described above for more than 15 years. The projects were mostly funded by the European Commission and the FP6, FP7 and H2020 frameworks, as well as the Danish and Greek states. Additionally, I have (co-)authored more than 70 peer-reviewed scientific papers published in journals, conference proceedings and books.

Moreover, I have (co-)organized conferences and workshops in the area of Mobile Robotics, Robot Vision, Human-Robot Interaction and Robot Ethics. I am the head of the Steering Committe of Aalborg Robotics Challenge, I serve in the editorial board of Emerald's Industrial Robot, as Editor-in-Chief, as associate editor for major robotics conferences including IEEE's IROS and ICRA, and as a regular reviewer for the major journals and conferences in intelligent robotics.

I am a Senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), Director of the euRobotics Topic Group on Standardisation, Trustee and Management Officer of an international charity on robotics science (CLAWAR Association Ltd.) and member of the advisory board, technical advisor and co-founder of two start-ups in the area of robotics and artificial intelligence.

Several platforms where you can find me: OrcID, Scopus, Google Scholar, LinkedIn, and Research Gate.

Teaching profile

I teach various courses and supervise student groups under the Problem-Based Learning model. I mostly teach about manipulation and perception methods for robots in industrial and social contexts.
