Research profile

Research profile

I am a Chair Professor of Rheumatology and Head of the Centre of Rheumatic Research Aalborg (CERRA), a growing research centre comprising postdoctoral researchers, PhD students, statisticians, research nurses, and students, all engaged in various aspects of the rheumatology specialty. Our objective is to develop new knowledge to best assist our patients. Our expertise spans a broad spectrum, with specialists in epidemiological, clinical, and laboratory research.

Our primary research areas include the efficacy and side effects of medical treatments for patients with rheumatic diseases (including biological therapies), personalised medicine, polyautoimmunity, immunology, and comorbidities associated with inflammatory arthritis, vasculitis, and connective tissue diseases. Additionally, we investigate the impact of multimorbidity on the prognosis of various patient groups, including those suffering from back, neck, and other musculoskeletal pain. CERRA conducts research at an international level and maintains collaborations regionally, nationally, and internationally.

In addition to numerous clinical projects, we maintain a project folder on Aalborg University's server at Statistics Denmark (DST), granting us access to a range of national health registries and databases, enabling us to conduct registry-based research of international level. As part of our new strategic initiatives, we are undertaking Big Data studies, establishing a spine database, and exploring artificial intelligence and personalised medicine in collaboration with researchers at Aalborg University and the University of Oxford.

Teaching profile

I possess extensive teaching experience and have supervised students at the bachelor's, master's, and PhD levels, as well as postdoctoral researchers. My teaching portfolio includes specialty-specific courses in internal medicine, rheumatology, and oncology. I have also served as a course co-leader for several rheumatology-specific courses. Additionally, I have taught at the Danish Medical Association's one-day courses in "Practical Rheumatology" and have conducted courses in joint examination techniques.
