Niels is interested in how accounting information visualise performance of organisations in certain ways by including some aspects of performance while excluding others, and how this information form the basis for decision making, performance evaluation, and justification of managerial action. Niels is doing research in both public and private organizations.

Niels is academic coordinator for the Graduate Diploma in Business Administration (Financial and Management Accounting) (Danish: HD2 i Regnskab og Økonomistyring).

Supervision:
- Niels supervises projects on all semesters on M.Sc. in Management Accounting and Control (MAC), including M.Sc. theses.
- Niels supervises bachelor projects, primarily in the field of Accounting (financial accounting and management accounting).
- Niels supervises final projects on the Graduate Diploma in Financial and Management Accounting.
Teaching:
- Niels teaches 'performance measurement' on M.Sc. level.
- Niels teaches 'budgeting and incentives based management' (the themes on advanced variance analysis and cash flow statements and management of cash flows).
- Niels teaches 'management accounting' on the B.Sc. in Business Administration and Commercial Laws programme.
