Research profile

Pia Bøgelund is Associate Professor in facilitation of PBL and change management at the Department of Sustainability and Planning at Aalborg University, situated at the Danish Centre for Environmental Assessment (DCEA). She holds a master’s degree in Environmental Planning and a PhD in Environmental Decision Making and Planning and is trained as a coach and gestalt psychotherapist as well. Recently she finalized a core group education in Intensive Short Term Dynamic Psychotherapy (ISTDP). She also acts as the Head of Section for one of the 5 sections at the department and participate as part of the management group in the strategic leadership of the entire department.


Her core area of interest is facilitation of change, be it on an individual, group, or organizational level. This core interest has taken her into research on facilitation of group work and group dynamics, motivation, and conflict management within Engineering Education. Retention and dropout amongst 1. year engineering students has been another important research area just as PhD supervision, with a special emphasis on the facilitation of international PhD students. She has an interest in emotions in engineering educations and career facilitation of early career researchers in the university context and lately she has turned to facilitation of organizational changes resting on the principles of sustainability and regeneration management.


She has published on collaboration issues related to the AAU PBL model, skills development of supervisors, and the facilitation of independent international PhD students as well as emotions in engineering education and other issues. Emerging fields of writing is the use of LEGO Serious Play to further organizational change, creating supportive career systems in academia for academic and non-academic paths and how to involve key stakeholders in the necessary change towards a sustainable and regenerative future.

In her teaching she coaches PhD students and works with the training and skills development of university staff as concerns PhD supervision, career development, personal leadership, and project planning. Parallel to this she facilitates the career development of assistant professors and post docs within engineering.
