Personal profile
Research profile
I am Dr. Rogerio Pessoto Hirata, a dedicated researcher with extensive experience in biomechanics, pain mechanisms, and rehabilitation interventions, particularly for older adults and individuals with chronic pain conditions. My work encompasses various studies that investigate the interplay between physical performance, pain sensitivity, and functional mobility.
I have contributed to understanding the clinical features that differentiate fallers from non-fallers, particularly in older adults with osteoporosis. My research includes innovative interventions, such as a 12-week online dance program aimed at enhancing postural stability and gait speed in older adults, showcasing the benefits of physical activity for both mental and physical health.
In addition to my work on interventions, I have conducted numerous studies exploring the effects of pain on motor control and muscle function. My investigations into postural control under varying sensory conditions highlight the importance of pain modulation in maintaining stability and mobility. I have also addressed the efficacy of various assessment tools, such as inertial measurement units for movement analysis and smartphone applications for evaluating neck movement.

Teaching profile
Teaching Philosophy: My teaching philosophy emphasizes real-world applications of theory, critical thinking, and independent learning. I believe that students learn best when they can connect theoretical concepts to practical situations, particularly in complex subjects like biomechanics and neurophysiology. My goal is to foster students' critical thinking skills and equip them with the knowledge needed to navigate their professional lives effectively.
Teaching Experience:
- Institutions: I have taught at various universities in Brazil (USP, FMU, Gama Filho) and Denmark (UCN, Aalborg University).
- Courses: I have delivered courses in sport science, physical therapy, biomechanics, motor control, and neurophysiology. My responsibilities have included both theoretical lectures and group supervision across bachelor’s, master’s, and Ph.D. programs.
Teaching Methods:
- I employ interactive teaching methods, such as initiating classes with controversial questions to stimulate discussion and engagement.
- I utilize technology, including polls and Moodle, to enhance learning and gather student feedback in real-time.
- My supervision approach has evolved, promoting student autonomy while providing guidance during the initial phases of their projects.
Study Administration:
- I have served on several councils, including the Institute Council (Health Science and Technology) and the Academic Council SUND.
- I am are responsible for the Sports Science Laboratory and coordinate practical courses in the bachelor’s program in sports science.
University Pedagogy Qualifications:
- Completed the "Basic Course in Pedagogy for University Teachers" and the "Adjunktpædagogikum," focusing on university pedagogy, learning theories, and didactics.
Personal Reflections and Initiatives:
- I continuously seek to improve your teaching practices based on student feedback and pedagogical development courses.
- Recent initiatives include empowering students to take ownership of their projects and adapting your supervision style to foster greater independence among students.
