Research profile

Rolf Hvidtfeldt is an Associate Professor of Science Studies at Aalborg University in Copenhagen, where he co-leads the Humanomics Research Group. He is also the co-director of the FRONTIER Center for Advanced SSH at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities.

With a PhD, MA, and BA in philosophy, specializing in the philosophy of interdisciplinary science, psychology, and computer science, his recent research has focused on the impact, communication, and management of science and innovation, as well as interdisciplinary collaboration among both researchers and practitioners.

In many ways, Rolf’s research centers on the transfer of information across settings and how this affects the epistemic and practical value of the knowledge transferred. In his 2018 monograph, The Structure of Interdisciplinary Science, and several other publications, he has studied epistemic integration through the lens of the philosophy of scientific representation. This work has provided a productive foundation for analyzing and developing numerous interdisciplinary research activities.

For several years, he has taught courses and led workshops on interdisciplinary research leadership and impact strategy and planning. He has advised on the development of numerous large-scale interdisciplinary research projects across disciplines, including biology, bioimaging, psychiatry, psychology, political science, sociology, computer science, research evaluation, and communication. Additionally, he has served as an advisor to funding agencies, universities, interest groups, and national and international public organizations.

Rolf is currently involved in several AI-related projects, including Algorithms, Data, and Democracy (funded by The Velux Foundations) and Responsible AI for Value Creation (funded by The Grundfos Foundation), with a focus on the importance of various disciplinary perspectives for the development and understanding of beneficial AI-based technologies.
