The Influence of Integration on the Spatial Segregation of Ethnic Minorities

Project Details

Description

The aim of the Ph.D is to study how integration influences the spatial segregation of ethnic minorities. Through the use of register data the Ph.D will analyse the connection between the housing careers of ethnic minorities and their family, work and integration career. The quantitative study will be supplemented with a qualitative study based on interviews with ethnic minorities. This will provide in-depth knowledge on the motives of ethnic minorities for moving away from or staying in ethnic neighbourhoods. The Ph.D will aim to establish whether spatial segregation leads to spatial isolation of ethnic groups or whether living in ethnic neighbourhoods are only a phase in the housing careers of ethnic minorities. Through this it will be possible to establish to what extent the Danish empirical data gives evidence to support the existing theories on the influence of integration on spatial segregation in particular the Spatial Assimilation Theory and the Ethnic Resources Theory. The Ph.D is part of the Nordic research project NODES (The Nordic Welfare States and the Dynamics and Effects of Ethnic Residential Segregation).
