Project Details

Description

Knowledge on ISCO involving catalyzed peroxygens (hydrogen peroxide or persulfate) is very limited in Denmark. Modified Fentons was unsuccessfully applied 3 times back in 1999 and persulfate was unsuccessfully used at a former gas station in 2008 for the very first time in Denmark. These are the only field experience with the techniques in Denmark even though many sites are well suited for ISCO. Hence, there is a need for more knowledge in Denmark in order to spread the use of ISCO.

The PhD project focuses on application of H2O2 and S2O82- under typical Danish conditions. Through out the project results from H2O2 and S2O82- experiments will be compared and differences discussed. All tests will be performed with soil samples from actual sites, where ISCO is considered to be applied. Laboratory and pilot scale experiments will mainly be performed within the four areas mentioned below.

1.    Decomposition and enhanced stability of H2O2 and S2O82-
2.    Total oxidant demand (TOD) measurements for catalyzed peroxygens
3.    Activation of S2O82- (with H2O2)
4.    Formation of reactive species
