An innovative concept of using strengthened scale and cement as a barrier material for well abandonment (SCBarrier)

Project Details

Description

The objective of the study is to further investigate the potential of using scale and cement in combination as a barrier for well abandonment. The project will mainly focus on: (i) generation of artificial scale and synergistic effects between the electrochemical method and the strengthening treatments of scale, and (ii) effective ways to strengthen scale and the properties of the scale- cement composite. Various testing methods will be adopted to elucidate the properties of the composite barrier, with a special attention to the scale-cement and scale-steel casing interfaces. Based on the results, recommendations will be made with respect to the use of scale-cement barrier. AAU will focus on (i) and microscopic analysis to reveal the working mechanisms, while AU will concentrate on (ii) and benchmarking the properties of the G/H oil well cement barrier. There will be close collaborations between AAU and AU. The outcome of this project will reveal the suitability of the concept and form the first knowledge basis on the use of scale-cement barrier for well abandonment.
