Project Details

Description

During this project, we willinvestigate the presence of three groups of anthropogenic chemicals:

• Heavy metals (Hg, Cd, Cu and Pb, Zn, Ni),and
• Poly aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and
• Tributyltin (TBT)

in sediments at the coast/in the fjord between the five major harbours of NorthJutland: Hanstholm, Hirtshals, Skagen, Frederikshavn and Aalborg.
Further, we will test an innovative method based electrochemistry principlesfor remediation of contaminated seawater in a controlled environment at AalborgUniversity (AAU) Laboratories. This method produces a calcareous depositionthat traps the heavy metals. The calcareous deposition grows on metal cathodesunder sea water electrolysis and could be employed as coastal protection.
The project is fundedby Velux Foundation and runs from 2018 to 2020.
