Description
Degradation of organic pollutants by electrochemical oxidation has in the recent years gained more and more interest as a new innovative technique in treatment of polluted waters. In the electrochemical treatment, the pollutants are degraded at the surface of the electrodes and by electrochemically generated oxidants to non-harmful substances as water and carbon dioxide. In laboratory studies, high removal efficiencies of a wide range of toxic and harmful organics have been obtained, revealing the technique as a promising future solution in pollution abatement. This Ph.D. study concerns investigations of the electrochemical treatment of real polluted water matrices, where the complexity of the electrochemical processes is highly increased compared to the pure solutions.
and if successful results are obtained, to introduce the treatment technique as a possible solution in treatment of waters relevant for the Danish society. The sub objectives are:
- Investigations of electrochemical treatment of three different types of polluted water in order to determine the important control parameters. Formation of unwanted byproducts is investigated
- Studies of the formation and identification of the oxidants produced in the electrochemical process
- Apply the lab experience in a pilot scale investigation of treatment of one selected matrix in order to optimize the overall performance
