Circular Industrialised Construction Materials

Project Details

Description

CICMA is a synergy between Aalborg University, Department of Materials and Production, and COWI Buildings and Industry. This
unique collaboration leverages the strengths of both entities to address complex sustainability challenges, pushing and innovating the way we are manufacturing materials towards becoming more efficient and circular.

Objectives:
• Potentials: Identify potentials for circularity in construction materials, specifically in integration between the construction sector and the manufacturing sector.

• Barriers: Identify and rank barriers towards taking up circular approaches across the construction sector and the manufacturing sector.

• Tools and Methods: Identify methods and tools that can be adapted across the two sectors, facilitating sectoral integration to increase construction material circularity and identify research needs.

• Circular design concepts: Propose design concepts that incorporate different building material life cycles and different circular material strategies.

Key findings

Expected results:

• Overall aim: CICMa’s overall aim is to contribute to accelerating the shift towards a more sustainable future by enabling all actors within the construction value chain and across the manufacturing and construction sectors to collaboratively develop and implement circular economy practices, strategies, and business models.

• Effect for the society and industry at large: CICMa will be contributing to the to the sustainable and circular transformation of the two involved industries and the society at large. This research project serves as a pre-study for the entire industry, exploring potentials and how to overcome barriers, showing ways to more circular methods of manufacturing building materials.

• Material Innovation: By pushing the boundaries of how we produce building materials, this project aims to drive significant change in the way we are producing materials and constructing our buildings.

• Communication: Ongoing dissemination of the results to the industry through various formats.
