Background:
Rehabilitation of physical function and activity performance are key elements in interdisciplinary rehabilitative interventions after acquired brain injury (ABI). Accelerometry is a novel technology frequently used to assess performed activity in a non-intrusive way. However, the validity of accelerometer algorithms varies, and the reliability of accelerometry measurement in both hospital and home-life settings remains largely unexplored. Consequentially, no accurate method exists to assess physical activity during daily life activities following ABI. An algorithm to classify activity and activity intensity from accelerometer data was recently developed and automated on a sample of healthy people. Yet, the sensitivity and predictive value for people with ABI is unestablished.

Objective: To validate the psychometric sensitivity of an accelerometer-based activity monitor in a population of patients with ABI in a natural activity setting.

Methods:
The sensitivity and predictive value of activity classifications and activity intensity will be determined for a group of 20-30 patients with ABI admitted to Hammel Neurorehabilitation Center and Research Clinic (HNCRC). Activity monitoring will be performed mounting an accelerometer with non-allergenic tape on the lateral side of each participant's dominant or least affected leg while the patients performs daily life activities like walking, standing, sitting or lying down in a 15 minutes protocol.
