According to the European Hydrogen Strategy, clean hydrogen could meet 24% of energy world demand by 2050, with annual sales in the range of €630 billion. The Strategy also defines a target of installing at least 6 GW of renewable hydrogen electrolysers by 2024 and 80 GW of renewable hydrogen electrolysers by 2030 in EU and neighboring areas. To achieve such an increase, a full industrialization with significant reduction in lead times is needed. The challenge is multifold: electrolyzer modules must expand significantly into MW sizes, while limiting the spatial footprint as much as possible, reducing CAPEX cost, increasing efficiency and dramatically increasing production capacity.
The purpose of the DynAmmonia project is to demonstrate a new game changing technique within PtX. The new operation technique reduces the cost of green fuel production and prolongs electrolysis stack’s lifetime. A proper power electronic control structure is essential to apply the new technique.
This project is the first of two phases of DynAmmonia’s overall strategy. Phase 1, what this EUDP applications targets, will allow the consortium to test as well as manage all the modelling and design for the subsequent 1 MW testing due in Phase 2. The overall objective of this EUDP project is therefore to prove the outstanding potential of a new operation method by conducting a 6 month testing on 5 kW stacks. This will allow DynElectro and the whole consortium of partners involved to prepare for a subsequent 1 MW demonstration by developing the required control tools, components, designs and plans.
