Project Details

Description

This project aims to develop a non-invasive converter-level on-state voltage measurement unit and the associated algorithm, to realize a cost-effective plug-and-play solution for the condition monitoring of power semiconductor switches in power power electronic applications.

Layman's description

An Apple Watch is a kind of wearable device for us. One of its functions is to sense heartbeat and notify irregular rhythm. The E-Sense Power sensor is such a wearable device for electronic components made of power semiconductors. It can sense specific signals as “symptoms,” which can tell us the health status of them. This can be achieved in a plug-and-pay way, without accessing the systems to be monitored, just as simple as wearing a watch. It can be used for health monitoring and predictive maintenance of the electrical energy conversion systems in wind turbines, trains, electric cars, and industry drives, just to name a few possible applications. It can also be used as an Internet of Things (IoT) device for collecting relevant data and as a special voltage probe for R&D labs.
