HySTrAm- Hydrogen Storage and Transport using Ammonia

Project Details

Description

The HySTrAm project will develop and demonstrate a compact ammonia synthesis system which is based on two main consecutive stages:
• A “short-term storage” hydrogen vessel which will serve as a buffer to store and transport the hydrogen produced by electrolysis.
• An ammonia synthesis reactor based on the Haber–Bosch process where the stored hydrogen will react with nitrogen to form ammonia.
The two stages will implement important innovations. Within the hydrogen vessel stage, the porous material will be identified and optimised
through artificial intelligence (AI) technology. Within the ammonia generation stage, the reactor catalyst will be optimised introducing new
environmentally friendly materials; the reactor heating will be obtained directly on the catalyst through electrical inductance while the use of
an ammonia sorbent eliminating the need of the recirculation of reactants. In addition, artificial intelligence and machine learning will enable
the optimisation of the control of the plant in steady state and dynamic conditions.
