Life Cycle Assessment of Aluminium production in Greenland

Project Details

Description

The project covers a life cycle assessment (LCA) of ALCOA's planned aluminium production in Greenland, with special focus on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in a cradle-to-grave perspective. The LCA is meant to provide essential environmental information to the ongoing strategic environmental assessment (SEA) process. The purposes of the LCA are mainly:

  • - To compare the environmental impacts (induced and avoided) from the decision A) of placing a specific type of aluminium production in Greenland compared to the decision B) of not placing it there.
  • - To identify improvement potentials to be considered as part of the ongoing SEA process. These improvement potentials is mainly identified through dialogue with the industry and through BAT briefs.
