Open Virtual Neighborhood Network To Connect IoT Infrastructures and Smart Objects

Description

The project “Open virtual neighbourhood network to connect intelligent buildings and smart objects (VICINITY)”, co-funded from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 688467, foresees as an eligible activity the provision of financial support to third parties, as a means to achieve its own objectives.

Layman's description

VICINITY presents a virtual neighborhood concept, which is a decentralized, bottom-up and cross-domain approach that resembles a social network, where different IoT ecosystems are inter-connecting through an open gateway API (providing interoperability as a service) which enables interaction with IoT objects (devices and value-added services) from other different ecosystems as if they were their own. The IoT objects shared within the VICINITY virtual neighbourhood may be accessed by value-added services to provide cross-domain services using common semantics based on VICINITY ontology.

Key findings

VICINITY project has successfully implemented the VICINITY platform. VICINITY's approach is now demonstrating by a large-scale demonstration connecting 4 pilot sites and 4 testing labs in 7 different EU countries. The demonstration covers various domains including energy, building automation, health and transport.
