Description
The research project aims at:
1: Providing a systematic review of international research concerning youth gambling including treatment and intervention programs.
2. Estimating the prevalence of gambling activities among children and adolescents in Denmark and measuring the impact of structural conditions.
3. Analyzing qualitatively various aspects of gambling activities among children and adolescents in Denmark (e.g. gambling motives, social relations and networks, school performance, initial gambling experience, gambling ?career?, gambling related problems, financing etc.)
Until recently gambling with money, pathological gambling and problem gambling have been analyzed and discussed as phenomena related to the world of adults. However, as the overall participation in gambling activities has increased substantively over the last decades gambling among children and adolescents have attracted attention among researchers and professionals.
In general the expanding body of literature on youth gambling suggests that children and adolescents are at an increased risks for developing a wide collection of gambling related problems. American studies indicates that no less than 4 to 8% of young gamblers show serious gambling related problems while 10 to 15% are at risk for becoming problem gamblers with the several associated problems. Other studies states that pathological gambling among adolescents are parts of a wider constellation of problems (e.g. drug abuse and anti social behavior). Results from studies among Norwegian youths shows that problematic gambling (pathological gambling plus at risk gambling) was 5,22% and that 3,2% of all Norwegian youths may experience gambling related problems. The gambling market is developing rapidly, more and more gambling activities are offered and new technologies (such as the internet and mobile phones) seem to catalyse this process. With the increased availability of gambling activities flowing from this development there is reason to believe that gambling related problems among youths will increase quantitatively as well as qualitatively in the future. The aim of this research project is to explore and estimate the prevalence and characteristics of money gambling (i.e. all kinds of legal and illegal gambling activities in which both stake and winnings are money) activity among youths in Denmark and to provide a knowledge base for initiating treatment and intervention programs specifically directed at children and adolescents.
