The stipend is affiliated with the research project “Advanced Thermal Breaker” co-finansed by the Danish Advanced Technology Foundation, Fiberline Composites A/S and Aalborg University. The overall scope of the project is to develop a new concept for fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) window frames with combined high thermal insulation and load carrying capabilities. The insulation properties will be significantly improved compared to existing window profiles, and the concept must enable design optimization in terms of optimal synthesis of requirements for insulation, strength, stiffness and dimensional stability, and in parallel also improve architectural/aesthetic expression by means of slim window frames.

This PhD project, which is one of two affiliated with the research project (the other is placed with the Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering, Aalborg University), aims to develop methodologies to experimentally characterise the thermal properties of functionally graded polymer foam core materials (FGPC) specially developed for this project. Among others, a special measurement methodology based on the conventional Hot-Plate apparatus should be developed and validated.

The project also aims at developing a methodology for thermal analysis and design optimisation of heat transfer of composite window profiles utilizing FGPC. The modelling will be conducted by means of finite element analysis (FEA) using a continuum formulation in which the heat conductivity can be varied over the material volume according to the measured properties
