This project was fundet by the Velux Foundations:
There are approximately 330,000 health-related emergency calls in Denmark per year. About 36% of the calls come from citizens with a history of mental illness. A recent study shows that these callers are more likely to receive only telephone advice and not an ambulance. Moreover, the callers more often contact emergency departments or call emergency services again shortly after the phone call. This suggests that they have not received the help they needed while the reasons for this are currently not known. The purpose of this project is to create systematic knowledge of communication patterns in emergency calls with citizens with mental illness from a communication theoretical perspective. This knowledge is to be utilized to increase communicative options for professional call-takers to support their dialogues with citizens with mental disorders during emergency calls.
The project is a seed funding project directed to write a joint application “Equality in access to emergency health services” to the Velux Foundation HUMpraksis program 2022. Applicants are Den Præhospitale Virksomhed, Region Nord Jylland, and the Institute for Communication and Psychology, Aalborg University. The collaboration is financed by Velux Foundation to support the application process.
As part of the application process, we conduct a pilot study. In this study we engaged in a first conversation analysis of selected emergency calls to gain first experiences in the methodological possibilities for creating systematic knowledge of communication patterns in emergency calls with citizens with mental illness from a communication theoretical perspective.
