Abstract

In this paper, a PV battery hybrid microgrid with series connected microconverters is proposed. A few low voltage (LV) microconverters with different DC sources are series connected to meet with rated output voltage magnitude. A decentralized power control method is developed to realize grid- tied operation. First, droop control is implemented at central controller. The central controller gathers DC source information for each microconverters through low bandwidth communications (LBC), and calculates power demands for each microconverter depending on each DC source status. Second, local controllers follow power demands from the central controller through LBC and regulate power contributed by the corresponding microconverters. Each PV tracks its MPP while batteries compensate power transients caused by intermittent function of PV. Both active and reactive power are well distributed considering MPPT and state-of-charge (SOC) of batteries to ensure sustainable power injected to the grid, and apparent power for each microconverter is approximately the same. Simulated results are provided to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.
