Abstract

International shipping contributes to a major portion of global emissions. This is expected to grow at a faster pace due to economic and population growth. According to the Third Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Study 2014 of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), the total shipping emissions during 2007-2012 were 3.1% of global CO2 emissions, 2.8% of global CO2-equivalent (CO2e) emissions, 13% of global sulfur oxide (SOX) emissions, and 15% of global nitrogen oxide (NOX) emissions.
