Abstract
In Sweden, the search for the appropriate form of housing for the increasingly larger generation of people aged 65 years and older has entered the political agenda. The idea of a peaceful ageing process within the familiar home environment, supported by individualized eldercare services, dominates the
debate; home has become an aesthetic vision to realize in architecture. During the 20th century, the positive connotations of the home were merged into a normative architecture, and the criterion was further sharpened by the use of six national architecture competitions during the period of 1907 to 2012. These competitions have served as research material for this study on the homelike aesthetics. In this context, the word aesthetics regularly has changed from a direct understanding and to a postevaluative approach that has been moderated by architecture criticism. The overarching conclusion of this study is that the homelike aesthetics involves the following criteria: 1) small‐scaled or large‐scaled
buildings with space that is designed for an individual use and open for personal adjustments of this particular space; 2) these small‐scaled or large‐scaled buildings are integrated in residential areas; 3) this aesthetical view explores the sensuous dimension of architectural space, in order to 4) affirm the individual appropriating process of making it into a place to call home.
