Abstract
Parvoviruses can infect many animals, usually producing acute, systemic disease. Mink are hosting two distinct parvoviruses, mink enteritis virus (MEV) and Aleutian mink disease virus (AMDV). MEV represents the typical parvovirus and is closely related to parvoviruses in cats and dogs; its infection results in highly contagious systemic and enteric disease. Effective vaccines toward MEV are used worldwide to prevent disease. AMDV can cause chronic progressive disease with persistent viremia and extreme antibody production. The disease is related to immune complexes and no vaccines exist. This chapter focuses on the persistent ADMV infection.
