Abstract

Internationally, there is a growing concern over the consequences of a rising level
of inequalities for political cleavages. Democracy and the rule of law are threatened as populism is on the rise in many countries, with authoritarian regimes gaining support. In relation to these issues, the Nordic countries have a particular position due to their strong welfare traditions, their strong democratic traditions, their relatively low levels of inequalities, and their exceptionally high levels of trust. This makes Denmark a very interesting case for exploring the relationship between class structures and political boundaries. We are particularly interested in political opinions and feelings of trust or confidence towards institutions, as divides related to these issues speak to social cleavages and lack of cohesion.
