Abstract
More optimistically, biking in Copenhagen has a large potential to show how cycling can be an integrated part of everyday life in a sustainable mobility system. Copenhagen has the infrastructure that supports everyday cycling due to a long history of not excluding bicycles in favor of cars, which happened in many cities at the end of the 1950s onwards. The majority of Copenhageners agree that better infrastructure for cyclists is needed and 76% agree that some of the road space for cars should be used for improving cycling. A related concept of great potential impact is the idea of freedom which is normally associated with the car, but cyclists present a different understanding. Focusing on improving infrastructures for cycling makes a lot of sense from a socioeconomic perspective and not only in dense cities like Copenhagen. Making cycling part of intermodal mobility planning also adds to the possible range of trips that can be made partly by bicycle.
