Abstract

The prevalence of musculoskeletal and myofascial pain has increased over the past few years. It has been reported that referred pain from myofascial trigger points (TrPs) is involved in different musculoskeletal pain conditions, for example, headache, mechanical neck pain, shoulder pain, whiplash associated neck pain, temporomandibular pain, and lateral epicondylalgia. In addition, a mechanism-based classification of musculoskeletal pain explaining the presence of peripheral and central sensitization mechanisms, where myofascial TrPs are involved, has been proposed. Clinicians should be aware of the presence of myofascial pain by TrPs and their proper management in these musculoskeletal local pain syndromes, as these conditions are highly comorbid.
