Abstract

Filamentous community composition in wastewater treatment plants across the world was characterized based on samples collected at 667 wastewater treatment plants from 33 countries using improved 16S rRNA gene reference database and taxonomy that allows species-level identification of all microbes using amplicon sequencing. Here we present the first overview of the filamentous bacteria present in wastewater treatment systems worldwide and their distribution, and we provide an example of detailed species-level characterization of one of the most important filamentous bacteria, Ca. Microthrix.
