Abstract
The piqueteros movement emerged in Argentina in the late 90s as a consequence of the growing unemployment and poverty, that followed the beginning of the economic crisis. The movement started to make claims on behalf of the unemployed through direct action in the streets and the establishment of alternative communities and worker controlled factories.
The collective identity, that is constructed through the movements, reflects the ancorage in the old social movements and is at the same time characterized by its emergence in the postindustrial society. The identity depends on the inclusion into the productive system and on the concept of work, which is extended so as to include the unemployed under the coverage of the worker rights. The piqueteros movement is situated between the old and the new social movements, as a theoretical distinction, whether we focus on the dialogue oriented sector, which aims at the inclusion of the unemployed into the labor market, or on the more radical part of the movement, which questions the productive system as a whole.
