Abstract

The switched reluctance technology offers some distinct advantages compared to conventional electric machines, such as simple and cheap construction, robust design, fault tolerant operation and high-speed capabilities. In the last couple of decades, improvements to the conventional SRM have been suggested, though each suggestion is subject to its own weaknesses. This paper presents a novel double U-core technology with short flux paths and efficient use of copper, as well as a unique stator design. The process of design and construction is presented. A demonstrator is build and detailed tests are described together with the results.
