Abstract

Leading academic development units might seem a topic with limited outreach. However, leading such units holds great potential when it comes to the contribution of academic and educational development to the on-going development and change of institutions of higher education. We can see that, as educational development units are growing in numbers, so are respective leadership positions. International research points out their important systemic function in the provision of high quality teaching and learning. However, the empirical basis and underpinnings on this phenomenon are limited so far. For this reason the following chapter draws on theoretical work and evidence from neighbouring fields to paint a picture of the affordances and contributions leadership of higher education development units brings about.
