Dynamic Multi-SIM gap creating procedure

Abstract

User Equipments (UEs) supporting insertion of Multiple Subscriber Identity Modules (Multi-SIM) have been becoming increasingly popular within the last half decade. The end-user requirements for low cost is achieved by implementing a minimum of extra hardware resources, compared to a single SIM UE. The sparse amount of added hardware give rise to access conflicts between the multiple protocol stacks, and the available hardware, ending up in lost data on at least one of the connections. This paper suggests a framework using a dynamic weighting system based on the data characteristics, to resolve such conflicts. The goal of the weighting is to handle conflicts optimally; such that each protocols procedure has minimal impact on the others. We present the framework, as well as the dynamic weighting routine. Furthermore, performance results are presented, showing that the proposed method significantly reduces the latency experienced by the active data connection, when under the influence of Multi-SIM conflicts. The results are obtained using a Long Term Evolution (LTE) downlink simulator combined with a Global System for Mobile (GSM) control channel simulator. Furthermore, we also analyse the impact on the conflicting idle mode Subscriber Identity Module (SIM).
