Employer preferences towards recruitment of refugees? A Danish vignette study

Abstract

An important arena for integration of refugees in their new host countries is the labour market. However, refugees have markedly lower employment and participation rates compared to native citizens. We examine the preferences of Danish employers towards recruitment of job seekers with a refuge background. We estimate employer preferences in the hiring process among different ethnic refugee groups and nationalities (Iraqi, Ethiopian and Ukrainian refugees compared to Danish natives) through a vignette experiment. We find that applicants with a refugee background are significantly less likely to be hired than the control group
