Abstract

In this manuscript, the design of a dualport/dual-polarized slot antenna with improved gain
characteristic is proposed for ultra-wideband (UWB)
applications. The antenna design contains a diamond-ring slot
radiator fed by two independently arrow-shaped microstrip
feeding lines which can exhibit a polarization diversity
characteristic. A low-cost FR-4 dielectric (= 4.4, = 0.02) is
used as the substrate. In order to increase the gain
characteristic of the antenna a 10×10 single-layer frequency
selective surface (FSS) is employed below the dual-polarized
slot antenna. The unit cell of the proposed FSS contains a
square-ring radiator with a protruded circular-ring strip. A
maximum gain of 9 dBi with less than 3 dB variation is
obtained over the UWB frequency band. The characteristics
of the dual-polarized UWB slot antenna with and without the
FSS were examined using simulations and good simulation
results have been obtained.
