Abstract
Discusses the analysis of start/stop strategies for the Diesel generator in a hybrid wind/Diesel system without storage. Input to the model consists of wind speed and load demand time histories. The model computes the fuel consumption, frequency drop, number of Diesel starts etc. The wind speed time history is calculated in a stochastic model. Describes the load model used, and notes why a time step of 2 seconds is used. The simulation program is used for comparing two strategies, one is straightforward and uses the actual value of present power production as the forecast (start), with an averaging, low pass filter procedure for the stop strategy. The other is an adaptive prediction strategy. Results obtained for 10 runs indicate that, surprisingly, the adaptive prediction strategy does not perform better than the simple strategy. Concludes that the gain in using optimal prediction should be larger for higher mean wind speeds and for longer look ahead times (longer start time for the Diesel unit. (C.J.U.)
