Abstract

"Where are you?" This continues to be the first question of the most of the telephone calls today. In order to accommodate and satisfy the user demands, the next challenge is to create a standardized global and seamless personal navigation system. The latter will integrate the current and upcoming positioning and communication platforms, will be able to work anywhere (indoor and outdoor, in remote and urban areas), and will enable previously unconceived services, thus becoming an integrant part of our daily life, like the sms today. The main steps towards the implementation of such a system will embrace the understanding of the potentials of new services (e.g., advanced LBS), the growth of the current satellite navigation technologies (GPS/EGNOS/Galileo), and the integration with 4G mobile communication systems. The Springer – Wireless Personal Communications journal – through the launch of this Special Issue aims at seek original papers on the state of the art in the area of Global and Seamless Personal Navigation.
