Impact of Modulation Strategies on the Reliability and Harmonics of Impedance-Source Inverters

Abstract

Impedance-source inverters, e.g., quasi-Z-source inverter (qZSI), with various modulation strategies have been explored in terms of voltage gains, switching losses, inductor current ripples and capacitor voltage stresses in the literature. However, the corresponding modulation strategies can affect voltage/current stresses, power losses, inverter thermal loading and harmonics. In this paper, the impact of space vector modulation (SVM) strategies on the reliability and total harmonic distortion of the qZSI is studied. Three different SVM strategies are investigated, where the current stresses and power losses are calculated theoretically. More importantly, a comparison of the maximum current stresses, power losses, thermal stresses, the number of cycles to failure of the power switches, and output current harmonics was performed. This enables identifying the most appropriate modulation strategy for the qZSI considering the efficiency, reliability and harmonics. Simulations and experimental tests are provided to validate the analysis and comparison.
