Introducing a nature app to the nexus of practice of a guided nature tour

Abstract

True to the performative approach to nature (e.g. Szerszynski &al 2003), my presentation explores the multitude of entanglements that can be uncovered when closely analysing guided nature tours. The participants encounter a material nature of various types of natural areas, plants and animals. The historical bodies relate to what they see, hear and touch when moving through and stopping to examine the nature. This includes taking photos, naming and sometimes debating the category of the plant or an animal. One way of sharing these representations with a larger community of practice is an app that makes it possible to share one's sightings with other nature enthusiasts and a specific research project. I'll examine how exactly the app is introduced. Szerszynski, B., Heim, W & Waterton, C. (2003) Nature Performed: Environment, Culture and Performance. Oxford, Blackwell.
