Long Term Performance of Air to Air Enthalpy Exchanger under Danish Climate conditions

Abstract

The advantages of using membrane-based enthalpy exchangers under cold climate are not well known. The present article describes the research and some of the outcomes of the experimental study for evaluating the long-term performance of relatively new, polymer membrane-based quasi-counter flow parallel plate enthalpy exchanger and the energy-saving potential under Danish cold climate conditions. For this purpose, a test rig was designed and built in the laboratory at Aalborg University Copenhagen. The results show that the sensible effectiveness is almost independent of the outdoor temperature whereas the latent effectiveness and the total effectiveness are dependent on outdoor temperature. The results also show that the sensible, the latent and the total effectiveness are functions of face velocity. The effectiveness of enthalpy exchanger in terms of energy transfer rate has been discussed in detail. Additionally, it is concluded that 5% to 12% energy is recuperated from the latent part and 88% to 95% energy is recovered from the sensible part.
