Abstract
This paper suggests an appropriate framework for synchronous generator loss of field (LOF) protection studies by using RSCAD software incorporated with real-time digital simulator (RTDS). A single machine system is modeled in RSCAD environment and LOF studies are done precisely on it. Various types of LOF events, including short circuit and open circuit with crowbar or surge-arrester activation, which cannot be studied in common kinds of power system software, are investigated. The obtained results demonstrate that the generator dynamics differ in the face of various LOF failures. Therefore, the effectiveness of the mentioned framework for LOF protection studies becomes clear.
